Vernon Vincent Haywood
Colonel USAF (RET) Born-October 24, 1920, Raleigh, N.C. Married -Wife, Alma (Cobb): Son, Vernon Vincent Haywood Jr. Education - Hampton Institute, 1938 - 1942; BGE. University of Nebraska - Omaha; BS. University of Arizona. Military Service - Entered Aviation Cadet Program, Tuskegee AAF August 1942. Graduated a Second Lieutenant, US Army Air Corps April 1943 (Class 43D). During WW II Colonel Haywood served with the 332d Fighter Group, 302d Fighter Squadron as Flight Commander, Operation Officer and Commander, 70 combat missions, 356 combat hours. Returned to Tuskegee AAF in 1945 as Assistant Director Instrument Training School with subsequent assignments as
Lockbourne AFB, Ohio. In 1949, entered Jet Pilot Training Instructor Program, Williams AFB, Arizona holding positions as
Assistant Section Commander and Section Commander, 3525th Pilot Training Wing. Additional Overseas Tour - Japan, with the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing at Chitose, Johnson and Yokota air bases; Clark AFB P.I., Hq. 13th AF; Saigon Vietnam, Headquarters MACV. Other Assignments- Kirtland AFB NM, Director Of Operations and Training 34th Air Division; Stewart AFB N.Y. Director of Safety, 64th Air Division; Davis Monthan AFB, Arizona, Deputy Director for Operations, 4453rd Tactical Training Wing and Special Assistant to the Commander, Military Aircraft Storage and Dispositions Center. Retired October 1971 with 29 years military service, command pilot with more than 6000 hours flown mostly in fighters.
