Lineage 

Constituted as 96th Maintenance Group on 13 March 1942.  Redesigned as the 96th Service Group and activated on 25 July 1942.  Trained in providing field service to the 332d Fighter Group at Selfridge Field, Michigan and Oscoda Field, Michigan from May 1943 to December 1943.  Moved to Italy in early February 1944.  Assigned to 12th Air Force Service Command.  Provided field service to 332d Fighter Group Squadrons located at Montecorvino and Campodichino Air Fields.  Transferred to 15th Air Force Service Command in mid April 1944.  The 366th Air Service Squadron, 1000th Signal Company and 1765th Ordnance Service and Maintenance Company were transferred from the 96th Service Group to the 38th Service Group and located at Ramitelli Air Field to provide field service to the 332d Fighter Group.  The remainder of the 96th detachment from Service Group ( including a detachment from the 1000th Signal Company) were transferred to Jesi, Italy to provide emergency service on Allied aircraft returning from raids on targets in Germany and other Axis Nations.  Inactivated on 15 April 1945 and redesigned as 523rd and 524th Air Service Groups
